The role in a nutshell:
You will form part of Luno’s Market Surveillance team based in Cape Town and will help scale the capability of the team for Luno’s global business with support from a growing team of enthusiastic, energetic Lunauts and through the use of technology and data-driven insights. You will report to the Market Surveillance Manager in South Africa and collaborate with other Anti-Financial Crime and Liquidity team members across multiple regions.
Your mission will be:
Your efforts as a Market Surveillance Analyst will ensure market conduct compliance is upheld by investigating, analysing and responding to surveillance alerts and suspicious trading events. The role will require agile execution on key projects and operational delivery of work within the functional team, while applying structured analysis to inform sound, evidence-based decisions.

Knowledge you are required to have and apply:
- Working on varied and often complex problems that require the assessment of multiple factors, applying sound judgement and learned techniques to deliver structured, data-informed analysis and investigation within the Market Surveillance policy framework and the broader Risk Management and Compliance Programme (“RMCP”).
- Vetting your own work and delivery, communicating progress and escalating blockers to the team
- Supporting internal compliance audits and facilitating compliance with regulations to ensure the market is operated in an orderly, fair and transparent manner;
- Understanding Market Surveillance regulations and developments in legislation, and pointing out when you suspect that Luno may be in breach of regulations
- Identify and adequately resolve issues noted on our exchange monitoring software that relate to Market Surveillance responsibilities.

Investigate, Analyse & Execute:
- Independently escalate a series of alerts into a full-scale investigation, and interpret whether the trading behaviour is risky or explainable by market dynamics
- Analyse transactions, identifying suspicious patterns and behavioural trends, and distinguishing between legitimate and suspicious activities using sound analytical judgement and available data sources
- Adheres to the defined procedure for resolving an investigation or escalating risky activity, able to derive an appropriate recommendation and communicate the outcome
- Identify broader trading patterns or trends emerging across alerts and proactively raise potential systemic risks to the team

Technological Expertise:
- Independently uses problem-solving methodologies and available internal and external data tools to conduct structured investigative analysis on trading activity
- Understand, tune and report on trade surveillance rules and thresholds
- Understand market dynamics and root causes of changes affected by the functional area, and how they impact internal and external tools
- Comfortable working with datasets and interpreting quantitative outputs generated by surveillance systems

Curiosity, Industry Awareness & Crypto Risk Assessment
- Demonstrates a strong interest in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape, staying informed on emerging trends and projects
- Applies critical thinking to assess the legitimacy, risk, and strategic fit of crypto assets under review
- Supports safe and compliant asset listings that align with Luno’s growth strategy and regulatory expectations

Reporting Writing & Key Risk Indicator (KRI) Management: Compiling clear, accurate and evidence-based reports based on work performed, contributing to key risk indicators and ensuring outputs are supported by reliable data analysis applicable to the functional area as well as filing regulatory reports to ensure compliance and deepening trust with regulators;

Cross-functional / team collaboration & Written / Oral Communication: Developing stable working relationships, internally and externally and communicating with the wider Financial Crime and Liquidity team to support ad-hoc requests and queries

Business & Anti-Financial Crime Strategic Goals: Providing insights that contribute to the team's strategic direction and ability to understand Luno's function/department strategy.
A little about you:
- A relevant university degree from a recognised tertiary institution;
- At least 3 years of experience in a financial markets-related role within a trading or compliance environment;
- Ability to adapt within a fast-paced environment;
- Strong analytical, detail-oriented mindset with the ability to interpret and draw insights from data;
- Ability to conduct quantitative analysis using varied information sources to investigate complex financial transactions and trading behaviour;
- If not a South African citizen, an existing, valid permit to work in South Africa;
- A can-do, get-things-done attitude with outstanding problem-solving skills and the ability to conceptualise new ideas;
- Friendly, articulate, sound interpersonal skills and driven to succeed;
- Excellent English communication and writing skills;
- Strong sense of ethics, transparent, responsible and with unwavering integrity.
It will be highly advantageous if you have:
- An SAIFM certification or other relevant certification, such as an RPE specialisation in the SA Financial Market;
- A BSc, BEng, BComm or other relevant qualification from an accredited college/university in Finance, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Math or a related quantitative field of study;
- Have a track record of working in Fintech or Regtech environments;
- Are familiar with and passionate about cryptocurrencies.
