Safe Software is looking for an Assistant Controller to join our growing Finance team. As an Assistant Controller, you will partner closely with the Controller and CFO to lead accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance activities.

This role ensures the integrity and accuracy of financial information, strengthens financial processes, and supports the scaling of accounting operations to enable business growth. As a trusted advisor to Finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in building a strong financial foundation.

What You’ll Be Doing

As an Assistant Controller, you will be responsible for:

Strategic Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Act as an advisor to the CFO on accounting strategy, financial infrastructure, and system design while supporting strategic decision-making
  • Partner with department leaders to drive financial discipline, budgeting, and forecasting

Technical Accounting & Policy Governance

  • Lead technical accounting under IFRS and GAAP, serving as a key authority on complex accounting matters
  • Establish and evolve accounting policies and the chart of accounts, ensuring accurate revenue recognition and expense classification

Financial Reporting & Close Management

  • Oversee and support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including sales compensation reporting
  • Review and deliver accurate financial statements, variance analysis, and enhanced reporting dashboards

Audit, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Lead and support the annual financial statement audit and manage external auditor relationships
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve internal control frameworks to ensure compliance with Canadian and international tax, statutory, and regulatory requirements
  • Support treasury activities and maintain awareness of the Canadian and international tax landscape

Accounting Operations & Process Improvement

  • Oversee general ledger and sub-ledger operations to safeguard financial integrity
  • Support process improvements, ERP enhancements, and automation initiatives to scale accounting operations
  • Mentor and support the development of team members

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies

Safers come from a variety of backgrounds with a diversity in skills and knowledge. That said, we find that those who are most successful in this role have experience with the following areas.

Required skills:

  • Canadian CPA designation
  • 4 to 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and GAAP
  • Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools, with advanced Excel and financial modeling capabilities
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience, including mentoring and developing team members
  • Intermediate knowledge of the Canadian corporate tax environment and general familiarity with treasury processes
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate complex accounting matters into practical business solutions
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

Desired skills / Bonus points:

  • Experience scaling Accounting operations in a high-growth environment
  • Experience leading automation, ERP enhancements, or system transformation initiatives
  • Exposure to international tax or multi-entity reporting environments
  • Experience designing or enhancing internal control frameworks
  • Demonstrated track record of driving continuous improvement and process optimization
